“To have a sense of style, it shows you know yourself. People like that”.
Marie Kondo’s Konmari Method of organizing is unlike any other. Most tidying methods have you organize room-by-room or little-by-little, which doom you to pick away at your piles of stuff forever. If you thoroughly declutter your home by category, and organize efficiently, your life will never be the same.
Kondo’s book, The Life Changing Magic of Tidying up perfectly describes what will happen to you if you dedicate time to assess everything you own. The process is exciting and addictive because once you begin, you realize that your goal is to keep only the things you love. When you’re done, you are magically awakened to everything that brings you joy in your life too.
Nobody knows you better than you, but get ready to discover 5 things that will give clarity to your life.
1. What you save helps you focus on creating a life that you love
Instead of feeling pressure to throw things away – your focus is to have gratitude for the things that once brought joy to your life. If an item doesn’t bring you joy anymore, simply thank it for serving you and gently let it go.
You know that you want to simplify your life, but aren’t quite sure how to make that happen. As you move through these categories:
Clothes -books – paper – misc. items – sentimental items – in that correct order – you begin to understand what you need to do to reach your goals
The benefits you experience when you’re done include time, space, peacefulness, gratitude, simplicity, contentment, clarity, motivation, happiness, confidence – and much more.
2. You discover what you want to do in life.
Your house is tidy enough, according to anyone who knows you. For the most part, your things are in order. The stuff packed away in the attic, cellar, and garage are out of sight so it’s not a problem.
You have lots of books, a good amount of clothes (not all in your closet – but in different places). The kitchen is well kept, but cabinets are full, and counters are not clear. Too many towels, sheets and supplies fill your closets.
And decorations for every season, movies, papers, office supplies, junk drawers, electrical cords, etc., all have multiple homes throughout your house.
It’s not that you’re embarrassed to have people over, because your house looks fine. But it takes a good amount of time to clean and organize.
Organizing your house is an ongoing project which takes up just enough time to prevent significant changes from happening your life.
The awakening comes after you have completed the Konmari method. You will be surrounded by absolutely everything that brings you joy and you begin to appreciate the items you have kept. This way of thinking spills over into your life and you figure out what you want to do with all of the time you have gained.
3. What you throw away helps you transition from your past
The act of throwing out your high school and college pictures (where you know you had struggles) magically frees you from the hold they have on you. You have transformed and they are not contributing to who you are today.
If there are pictures/letters of old relationships – let those go too. Don’t let them get in the way of how you want to live your life right here and now.
This process magically releases the toxins that keep you stuck. Letting the difficult parts of your life go, frees you from them , so you have space to focus on who you are NOW and the future.
4. You find out that you don’t need “things” to make you happy.
The purpose of the Konmari method is to be happy with what you already have, keeping only those things that speak to your heart. You may not fully understand how you can feel more content at home and happier with life you have until you get rid of the items that no longer “spark joy”. When you’ve pared down your items, so do the trips to Home Goods and Target. More open space is preferred over having stuff on your counters and tables.
Consider this: If your house were to become completely flooded in one hour, what would you save? Would you even remember all the things you left behind? Think about how you could simplify your home, which holds only the things you love.
5. You are able to make decisions with more confidence
The Konmari method encourages tidying by category – not by location – beginning with clothes, then moving on to books, papers, komono (miscellaneous items), and, finally, sentimental items. Keep only those things that speak to the heart, and discard items that no longer spark joy.
Start with your clothes because you are the least attached to them. You will have to make hundreds of decisions whether or not to keep your items. By the time you finish decluttering your sentimental items, decision making becomes easier.
Your confidence grows and this helps in all aspects of your life. When you are able to easily make Decisions this helps you feel better about yourself.
What Happened When I Pared Down My Books
My bookshelves contain 300 less books since I “Konmaried” them. I love Children’s books, especially fairy tales, but there were way too many. After 2 tries, I was able to give up all that did not spark joy. Now I have a “shrine” of all my favorites.
When I examined my other collections, most of my self-help books survived the purge. Looking out at me (all lined up on one shelf) were – The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up – Spark Joy – The Art of Discarding – Organizing From the Inside Out -How To Live A Beautiful Life -The Happiness Project – From Panic To Power – Stop Obsessing – Life Coaching For Dummies – Coactive Coaching – The Passion Test – Happy For No Reason – What To Say When You Talk To Yourself – How to Stop Worrying and Start Living – and many more –
Then it hit me.
I saved these amazing resources that taught me how to overcome anxiety, organize my home, and be happier.
I have the ability to share what I learned. So, I created this website to record my thoughts and experiences to help make your life just a little bit easier. I have a lingering fear that my clueless butt will never learn all this website technology. And my writing isn’t good enough. But I’ve learned that I should follow my passion because it makes me happy.
I needed to thoroughly declutter and organize my house. This is the reason why I experienced the magical transformation. It enlightened me to share what I learned. I know myself pretty well, but I learned 5 more things about me after Decluttering with the Konmari method that changed my life.
